Hornell library vandalized, but community stands strong

The Hornell Public Library was hit with vulgar graffiti this week, causing thousands in damage and forcing the removal of its historic front doors, according to the Hornell Evening Tribune. Two nearby businesses were also targeted, prompting a police investigation.

Despite the destruction, the library remains open, redirecting patrons through a side entrance. Director Denise Chilson said the damage is extensive due to the building’s historic status, but praised the overwhelming community support and quick response from city officials.

Staff remain hopeful for swift repairs, even as they face high costs and logistical challenges. Residents continue to rally behind the library, determined not to let one act of vandalism disrupt a vital community space.
