Waterloo, officially recognized as the “Birthplace of Memorial Day,” is set to host its annual Celebrate Commemorate events starting May 23. The festivities will span four days, leading up to the traditional May 30 observance featuring grave decorations, ceremonies, and a military parade.
Highlights include Civil War reenactments, children’s crafts, music, a Saturday parade honoring wounded veterans, and historical displays at the M’Clintock House — a key site in women’s rights and Underground Railroad history. Events will be alcohol-free and pet-free.
The celebration honors both Waterloo’s deep historic roots and its ongoing commitment to military remembrance and community engagement.
