VTP – Pruning VLAN explanation and lab to demonstrate, and example of trick question for Exam day (bottom of post)!

Topology has been reset to VTP Version 2, Domain CCNP, and above Topology configured. Note that the two VTP Client switches both have interfaces in a common VLAN, interfaces in separate VLANs, and the VTP Server only has Trunk interfaces which are considered to be in "all VLANs" by default.   The Fundamentals of VTP … Continue reading VTP – Pruning VLAN explanation and lab to demonstrate, and example of trick question for Exam day (bottom of post)!

VTP – Versions / Passwords / Extended VLANs DEEP DIVE – Explained and labbed exhaustively so prepare thyself!

I will only be using the 3560 stand alone for IOS difference comparisons, and will only be using the 3750's in a two layer Core / Access switch model to demonstrate the differences between the 3 different VTP versions. This will be a long, lab heavy post to demonstrate behaviors, so prepare yourself for a … Continue reading VTP – Versions / Passwords / Extended VLANs DEEP DIVE – Explained and labbed exhaustively so prepare thyself!

VTP – The three Advertisement types, what information they contain, and their behaviors explained!

Above is the current switched Topology and the VTP mode / Trunk connections. Without further ado: The three different types of Advertisements, and details regarding them Summary Advertisements - Sent every 5 minutes by VTP Servers or triggered by a change in the VLAN Database (vlan.dat in Flash), these contain the VTP Domain name / … Continue reading VTP – The three Advertisement types, what information they contain, and their behaviors explained!

VTP – Intro to Advertisements and Config Revision #, DEEP DIVE into Cisco “VTP synch issue” and Cisco’s official fixes for it – Important!

Advertisements / "Subset Advertisements" and Configuration Revision # Now as previously stated, the highest "Configuration Revision #" in a VTP Domain is considered … Continue reading VTP – Intro to Advertisements and Config Revision #, DEEP DIVE into Cisco “VTP synch issue” and Cisco’s official fixes for it – Important!

VTP – Modes explained, behaviors with different versions, old “sh vtp status” vs new, and very important VTP default info for exam day!

So from my edit of the last post, SW1 and SW2 at this point are both again in the same VTP Domain, "CCNP" and are indeed exchanging VLAN information. I am sure you saw throughout the lab, that "Server" mode in "sh vtp status" was always on, because that is the default mode for VTP. … Continue reading VTP – Modes explained, behaviors with different versions, old “sh vtp status” vs new, and very important VTP default info for exam day!

VTP – Is it on by default? IMPORTANT default behaviors, while demonstrating a simple VTP configuration (and breaking it)!

After truly resetting all switches so no VLANs exist outside defaults, no trunks are configured, etc I will build the above Topology through this segment (though I may only work on portions and lead up to the it as a whole at the end). Now for those who haven't tested for CCNA recently, VTP is … Continue reading VTP – Is it on by default?
